- boil in water to kill bacteria
- avoid soaking in water
- place away from high heat or flames
- cut in small pieces, then place in the green bin to compost or directly compost in the backyard
- loofah can also be used like coconut fibre in the garden, excellent at water retention, growing seedlings, creating a potting mix, pest resistance, and use as bedding in worm bins
Why are cellulose sponges better than plastic ones?
- kitchen sponges are exposed to hundreds of different types of bacteria and experts recommend changing them once a week, which is problematic because plastic kitchen sponges take thousands of years to break down. it's recommended to use cellulose sponges which can be sanitized/disinfected in hot water (not recommended for plastic sponges)
- traditional sponges can shed microplastics which can make their way into our water cycle and end up in our rivers, oceans and drinking water

WHY THEY MATTER
PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED SPECIES
PANDA
Only 1,864 pandas left in the wild.
These adorable black and white bears originated from China and play an important role in the forest habitat where they live. Their fur collects seeds and plant matter, which is dispersed as they move around the forest.
Human development takes over pandas' habitat, making it harder to find bamboo and potential mates that are necessary to their survival. Our bamboo products are made with sustainably sourced bamboo from responsibly managed forests, which is non-threatening to pandas!
USING BAMBOO IN OUR PRODUCTS
Sustainably Sourced and Made
Bamboo is not only sustainable but one of the fastest-growing plants! It uses little water to grow, self-replenishes, requires no pesticides, fertilizer, or irrigation and is more economical than other woods. Not to mention that is less likely to crack compared to other wood materials.
All bamboo in our products is FSC certified, ensuring that they are sustainably sourced from regulated forests and not from natural forests that our few pandas call home.
MEET GCF'S WORKING DOGS!
ANTI-POACHING K9S
GCF's Belgian Malinois dogs are a man and wildlife's best friend – with their agility, intelligence, and hunting instincts they have been helpful partners to anti-poaching units across Africa. On the field, these dogs are great at tracking and apprehending poachers – specifically sniffing out pangolin scales, rhino horn, and ivory.
Since 2015, GCF has supported and sponsored K9 anti-poaching units. Prior to receiving a trained K9, they ensure that the ranger unit is certified and trained. They must also have a stable reserve management infrastructure that ensures they will be taken good care of!
These hardworking dogs and their relationships with animals are one of many things that caught our eyes (and our hearts) for the organization. Read more about them!

Q&A with GCF Founder & President - Mike Veale
Our core conservation pillars include - Anti-Poaching, Counter Wildlife Trafficking, Community Based Conservation Efforts, Education and Awareness, and True Conservation (Research, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Wildlife Veterinary). Each avenue tackles true issues where people and wildlife meet to make the strongest impact.
We are also working on purchasing land and creating wildlife corridors to re-wild and interconnect protected spaces, expanding protected biodiverse habitats with community selected and employed conservationists.
