  • ideally dry completely between uses
  • boil in water to kill bacteria
  • avoid soaking in water
  • place away from high heat or flames
  • cut in small pieces, then place in the green bin to compost or directly compost in the backyard
  • loofah can also be used like coconut fibre in the garden, excellent at water retention, growing seedlings, creating a potting mix, pest resistance, and use as bedding in worm bins

Why are cellulose sponges better than plastic ones?🧐

  1. kitchen sponges are exposed to hundreds of different types of bacteria and experts recommend changing them once a week, which is problematic because plastic kitchen sponges take thousands of years to break down. it's recommended to use cellulose sponges which can be sanitized/disinfected in hot water (not recommended for plastic sponges)
  2. traditional sponges can shed microplastics which can make their way into our water cycle and end up in our rivers, oceans and drinking water

WHY THEY MATTER

PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED SPECIES

ELEPHANT

Loss of 33,000, on average, elephants per year.

The world's largest land mammal and one of the most highly intelligent species, the majority of these friendly herbivores prosper in the African continent.

Aside from their trunks, they are infamous for their ivory tusks, which are unfortunately highly sought after by poachers.

USING BAMBOO IN OUR PRODUCTS

Sustainably Sourced and Made

Bamboo is not only sustainable but one of the fastest-growing plants! It uses little water to grow, self-replenishes, requires no pesticides, fertilizer, or irrigation and is more economical than other woods. Not to mention that is less likely to crack compared to other wood materials.

All bamboo in our products is FSC certified, ensuring that they are sustainably sourced from regulated forests and not from natural forests that our few pandas call home.

MEET GCF'S WORKING DOGS!

ANTI-POACHING K9S

GCF's Belgian Malinois dogs are a man and wildlife's best friend – with their agility, intelligence, and hunting instincts they have been helpful partners to anti-poaching units across Africa. On the field, these dogs are great at tracking and apprehending poachers – specifically sniffing out pangolin scales, rhino horn, and ivory.

Since 2015, GCF has supported and sponsored K9 anti-poaching units. Prior to receiving a trained K9, they ensure that the ranger unit is certified and trained. They must also have a stable reserve management infrastructure that ensures they will be taken good care of!

These hardworking dogs and their relationships with animals are one of many things that caught our eyes (and our hearts) for the organization. Read more about them!

Q&A with GCF Founder & President - Mike Veale

Q&A with GCF Founder & President - Mike Veale

GCF works on the ground in up to 18 countries a year in Africa and Asia. We work hand-in-hand with rangers, communities, non-profits, government officials, wildlife veterinarians, and researchers to tackle multiple areas of need from the ground. We operate with 5 main pillars of conservation, each a life force of its own with multiple avenues.

Our core conservation pillars include - Anti-Poaching, Counter Wildlife Trafficking, Community Based Conservation Efforts, Education and Awareness, and True Conservation (Research, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Wildlife Veterinary). Each avenue tackles true issues where people and wildlife meet to make the strongest impact.
As a 501c3 non profit almost all of our funding comes from donors, grants, business partnerships. Funding keeps our programs, projects, and mission running. With the added comfort of consistent donations we are able to scale up and expand our current operations.
Currently, our biggest goal is to help multiple biodiverse reserves recover wildlife protection and conservation operations. This includes sponsoring ranger salaries, advanced ranger training programs, and equipment for the wildlife protection and conservation staff.

We are also working on purchasing land and creating wildlife corridors to re-wild and interconnect protected spaces, expanding protected biodiverse habitats with community selected and employed conservationists.
